Preventive & Periodontal

Prevention is the foundation of everything Dr. Tran does. He'd rather spend 30 minutes on a cleaning than hours fixing problems that could've been caught early.

Prevention is the foundation of everything I do. I'd rather spend 30 minutes cleaning your teeth twice a year than hours fixing problems that could have been caught early. That's just good dentistry. A lot of the big, expensive procedures people end up needing — crowns, root canals, even implants — started as something small that got ignored.

I've been taking care of families in Huntington Beach for over 20 years, and the patients who come in regularly for their cleanings almost never need major work. It's that simple. We'll check everything while you're here — your gums, your bite, screen for oral cancer — and if something's starting to develop, we'll catch it early when it's easy and affordable to fix. No lectures, no guilt trips. Just honest, straightforward preventive care.

Are You at Risk
for Gum
Disease?

Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults — and most people don't realize they have it until significant damage is done. Gum disease is largely silent in its early stages, making regular checkups and awareness of the warning signs critical for long-term oral health.

Warning Signs of Gum Disease

1

Bleeding Gums When Brushing

Blood on your toothbrush or when flossing is one of the earliest signs of gingivitis. Healthy gums should never bleed during routine oral hygiene.

2

Red, Swollen, or Tender Gums

Inflamed gum tissue that feels puffy or looks darker red than normal indicates bacterial infection below the gumline that requires professional treatment.

3

Gum Recession or Tooth Lengthening

When gums pull away from teeth, they expose sensitive root surfaces and deepen the pockets where bacteria thrive — a key sign of advancing periodontal disease.

4

Persistent Bad Breath

Chronic bad breath that doesn't improve with brushing often signals bacteria trapped in deep gum pockets — a hallmark of untreated periodontal disease.

5

Loose or Shifting Teeth

As bone and connective tissue are destroyed by gum disease, teeth may feel loose or begin drifting from their original position — a sign the disease has progressed significantly.

Why Prevention Pays Off

1

Stop Disease Before It Advances

Regular cleanings and exams catch gingivitis at Stage 1, before it progresses to bone-destroying periodontitis that's far more difficult and costly to treat.

2

Protect Your Heart and Overall Health

Research links untreated gum disease to increased risk of heart disease, diabetes complications, and stroke. Treating periodontal disease improves systemic health, not just your mouth.

3

Keep Your Natural Teeth Longer

Periodontal disease is the #1 cause of tooth loss in adults. Consistent preventive care keeps gum tissue and bone healthy, giving your natural teeth the best chance to last a lifetime.

4

Eliminate Chronic Bad Breath

Deep cleaning removes the bacteria colonies responsible for persistent halitosis that no amount of brushing or mouthwash can reach at home.

5

Save Money Long-Term

A twice-yearly cleaning costs a fraction of the surgery, bone grafts, or tooth replacements required when gum disease is allowed to progress untreated for years.

(714) 374-8800 Frequently asked dental questions
How often should I get a dental cleaning?
For most people, twice a year does the trick. But if you've had gum disease or you're prone to buildup, I might recommend every three or four months. It's not a one-size-fits-all thing — I'll tell you what makes sense based on what I see in your mouth. Learn more about our cleanings.
What are the signs of gum disease?
Bleeding when you brush, red or swollen gums, bad breath that won't go away, and gums pulling away from your teeth. The tricky part is that gum disease is often painless in the early stages, so a lot of people don't know they have it. That's why regular checkups matter — I can spot it before you feel it.
Can gum disease be reversed?
In the early stages (gingivitis), absolutely. A good professional cleaning and better home care can turn things around completely. Once it progresses to periodontitis, we can't reverse the damage, but we can stop it from getting worse with deep cleaning and ongoing maintenance. The earlier we catch it, the better.
What's the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning takes care of the surface — above and just below the gumline. A deep cleaning goes further, getting below the gumline into periodontal pockets where bacteria hide. It's a treatment for active gum disease, not just maintenance. I measure your pocket depths at every visit to determine which one you need.
Does insurance cover preventive dental care?
Yes — most PPO plans cover two cleanings and exams per year at 100%, which means no out-of-pocket cost for you. It's one of the best deals in dentistry, honestly. We accept most major insurance plans here in Huntington Beach, and our team will verify your benefits before your visit.
Why is preventive care important?
Because a $200 cleaning twice a year is a whole lot easier than a $3,000 crown or a $5,000 implant down the road. Prevention is the foundation of everything I do. I'd rather spend 30 minutes cleaning your teeth than hours fixing problems that could've been caught early. That's just good dentistry.
